Karri Kindy

The kindy 6-year-olds have had busy fingers this term in anticipation of the Early Childhood Winter Festival. Beanies and scarves have been flying off fingers and looms to be worn on the special night.
Crafting is an important skill for kindy 6-year-olds, and as some parents can attest, they can often get what is termed crafting fever.
Crafting offers children a range of wonderful skills, but most importantly, for the 6-year-old undergoing a significant developmental change, it brings consistency, repetition and a sense of growing independence to persist with a task until completed. In other words, when everything around you feels all at sea, focus on the tasks that bring order and a sense of predictability.

The following, while not exhaustive, are just a few of the other benefits crafting brings to young children.
  • Design- imbuing a sense of quality for colours (becoming familiar with tonal shades, complementary and contrasting colours)
  • Fine motor skill development
  • Problem solving- counting/observing/patterning
  • Instilling patience, persistence and fostering delayed gratification
  • Instilling capacity for creative processes
  • Rhythmic consistency and repetition
And now we will be onto the next craft project as the kindy 6 children busy their fingers further with weaving, stitching and sewing. Stay tuned!
